Why see a specialist?

Any dentist can offer to straighten teeth. A Specialist Orthodontist has gone on to complete several years of further full-time hospital training in how teeth, jaws and faces grow and move, and is listed on the General Dental Council’s specialist register for orthodontics. Only clinicians on that register may use the title.

For you, it means the person planning your treatment has treated the simple cases and the awkward ones: crowding, gaps, deep bites, crossbites, teeth that have not come through, and bites that need more than a set of aligners. It also means a straight answer about which approach will give the best result, including when the right advice is to wait.

Your options

Braces and aligners, all under one roof

Nobody is steered towards a single system here. Henry fits every type of brace, so the recommendation follows your teeth and your life, not the other way round.

What to expect

From first chat to final retainer

01

A proper conversation

We begin by listening: what bothers you, what you would like to change and what you would rather avoid.

02

Photographs and a 3D scan

Photographs, X-rays where they are needed and a digital scan with our iTero™ or Primescan scanner, in place of putty impressions.

03

A plan you can see

Henry talks you through the options on the surgery screen, with likely timings and a written estimate, so you can decide in your own time.

04

Straighten, then hold

Short, regular visits while the teeth move, followed by retainers to keep them where we have put them.

Orthodontics: your questions

Do I need a referral to see the orthodontist?+

No. You can book directly, whether or not you are already a Bellevue patient. If you have your own dentist, we are happy to keep them informed about your treatment.

What is the difference between a Specialist Orthodontist and a dentist who offers braces?+

A Specialist Orthodontist has completed several years of additional full-time training in moving teeth and guiding jaw growth, and is on the General Dental Council’s specialist register for orthodontics. Dr Henry Wong is on that register (GDC No. 172549).

Am I too old for braces?+

No. Teeth can be moved at any age, provided the teeth and gums are healthy. Many of our orthodontic patients are adults.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?+

It depends on what needs to move. Simple alignment can take a few months; most full treatment takes between one and two years. You will be given a realistic estimate at your consultation.

Will I need retainers afterwards?+

Yes. Teeth tend to drift throughout life, so retainers are part of every plan. We provide fixed wire retainers, clear removable retainers and Vivera retainers, and will advise on what suits you.

Is orthodontic treatment at Bellevue Dental private?+

Yes. Bellevue Dental is a private practice. Guide fees are published on our fees page, finance is available, and we welcome patients with private dental insurance.
