Types of brace
Small, strong and dependable. Still the first choice for many teenagers, with coloured or clear ties if they want them.
The same control from tooth-coloured brackets that blend in, so they are far less noticeable in conversation and in photographs.
A self-ligating system: each bracket holds the wire with its own small clip, so there are no elastic ties.
Fitted to the back of the teeth, so nothing shows from the front. Chosen mostly by adults who want fixed-brace precision kept private.
Clear aligners do a great deal, but some movements are still done best with a fixed brace: turning rounded teeth, bringing down a tooth that has not come through, closing large spaces and correcting more complicated bites.
A fixed brace also works every hour of the day without anyone having to remember it, which matters for a busy teenager and for plenty of adults too. If aligners would serve you just as well, Henry will tell you. Read about Invisalign® treatment.
Day to day
Brushing takes a little longer, and small interdental brushes reach around the brackets. Regular visits to our hygienist keep gums healthy throughout.
Most things are fine. Very hard, chewy or sticky foods can bend wires or loosen brackets, so those are best avoided.
A mouthguard made to fit over the brace protects teeth and lips in contact sports. Wind and brass players adapt within a couple of weeks.
Adjustments are usually every six to ten weeks and most are short. Retainers follow once the brace comes off.
These are starting points. You will have exact costs in writing before treatment begins, and finance is available to spread them.
Bellevue Dental is a private practice. We welcome patients with private dental insurance; please check what your policy covers for orthodontics. The full list is on our fees page.
Fixed braces are from £3,500, Damon braces from £4,000 and hidden lingual braces from £9,500. A consultation with our Specialist Orthodontist, Dr Henry Wong, is £150. You will have exact costs in writing before you start, and finance is available.
Most full treatment takes between one and two years, depending on what needs to move. You will be given a realistic estimate at your consultation.
Most people notice a slight change in their speech for the first week or two while the tongue gets used to the brackets. It settles with practice.
Teeth usually feel tender for a few days after a brace is fitted and after each adjustment. Softer food helps, and orthodontic wax stops a bracket rubbing while your lips and cheeks adjust.
Yes. There is no upper age limit, provided the teeth and gums are healthy. Many adults choose ceramic or lingual braces because they are harder to notice.
Neither is better for everyone. Fixed braces give the most precise control and work around the clock; Invisalign aligners are removable and harder to notice. Dr Henry Wong offers both and will recommend whichever suits your teeth.
