White fillings in Wandsworth

A filling repairs a tooth after decay, a chip or a failed older filling. We use tooth-coloured composite matched to your own enamel, so the repair is strong and hard to spot.

When a filling helps

Four common reasons

Decay

A cavity will not heal by itself. Removing the decay and sealing the tooth stops it going deeper.

A chipped tooth

Small chips and broken corners can usually be rebuilt in composite at one appointment.

An old filling

Fillings wear, crack and can leak at the edges. Replacing one in good time protects the tooth underneath.

Sensitivity

A worn or exposed area near the gum can be covered to make hot and cold drinks comfortable again.

What happens at the appointment

Once the tooth is numb we remove the decay or the old filling, keeping as much healthy tooth as possible. The composite is bonded to the tooth in thin layers, each set with a curing light, then shaped to your bite and polished.

If we find that the damage is deeper than expected, we will stop and explain your options. A tooth with an infected nerve may need root canal treatment, and a tooth that has lost a lot of structure may be better protected by an onlay or a same-day crown.

Old metal fillings can be replaced with tooth-coloured composite when there is a clinical reason, or simply because you would prefer it. We will tell you honestly when a sound filling is better left alone.

Fillings: your questions

How much does a white filling cost at Bellevue Dental?+

Tooth-coloured composite fillings are from £399 for a small filling, from £449 for a medium filling and from £499 for a large one. You will have the exact cost in writing before treatment.

Does having a filling hurt?+

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic first, so you should feel pressure and vibration but not pain. If you are anxious about treatment, tell us, and we can take things at your pace or talk about sedation.

How long do white fillings last?+

A well placed composite filling can last for many years. How long depends on the size of the filling, your bite and how well the tooth is cleaned, so we check every filling at your routine visits.

How soon can I eat after a filling?+

Composite is set hard before you leave the chair. Wait until the numbness has worn off before eating, so that you do not bite your lip or cheek.

When is a crown better than a filling?+

When a lot of the tooth has been lost, a filling may not be strong enough on its own. An onlay or crown covers and protects what remains, and we can often make one in a single visit with our same-day CEREC system.
